Quince - Cydonia oblonga Hardy to Zone 4...Not Picky About Soil Type ... Excellent SHADE Tree ~!! The quince (pronounced /?kw?ns/ ), or Cydonia oblonga , is the sole member of the genus Cydonia and native to warm-temperate southwest Asia in the Caucasus region. It is a small deciduous tree , growing 5-8 m tall and 4-6 m wide, related to apples and pears , and like them has a pome fruit , which is bright golden yellow when mature, pear-shaped, 7-12 cm long and 6-9 cm broad. Used as a rootstock for grafted plants, quince has the property of dwarfing the growth of pears, of forcing them to produce more precociously, and relatively more fruit-bearing branches, instead of vegetative growth, and of accelerating the maturity of the fruit. When a baby is born in Slavonia and Croatia, a quince tree is planted as a symbol of fertility, love and life. A decidious Tree growing to 7.5 m (24ft) by 7 m (23ft) at a medium rate. It is hardy to zone 4 and is not frost tender. It is in flower in May, and the seeds ripen in November. The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs) and are pollinated by Insects. The plant prefers light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils. The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils..It can grow in full shade (deep woodland) semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It requires moist soil.
